MISSION STATEMENT

The MAIN PURPOSE of Students for a Free Society shall be to advocate personal liberty with individual responsibility throughout the ETSU campus and the local communities via education and activism.

The SECONDARY PURPOSE of this group is to highlight social and governmental abuse and neglect of civil liberties, with the intent of raising public awareness of said abuse and neglect.

 


 

On October 24, 2009, at the Students for Liberty sponsored "Southeastern Conference", East Tennessee State University's Students for a Free Societyreceived the 2009 Outstanding Southern Group Award. The award was presented by Jared Fuller, Southern Director of Students for Liberty, to the members of SFS on the campus of Wake Forest, North Carolina.

 

The award states that the ETSU Students for a Free Society "have demonstrated exemplary initiative in the year of 2009 as a student group dedicated to the serious study, spreading, and promotion of the ideas of liberty on their campus and community".

 

Through 2009, Students for a Free Society was responsible for the "Ban the $cameras" rally and petition drive against Redflex redlight cameras in Jonesborough, TN, an Antiwar.com endorsed "Pro-Peace" lecture and rally in March of 2009, and provided speakers for three seperate "Tea Party" events in the Tri-Cities region. Members of SFS attended the 2009 Tennessee Libertarian Party State Convention in Knoxville, TN and were present at the 2009 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C.

 

In 2009, members of Students for a Free Societydonated over $200 to the American Cancer Society, $50 to the Wheelchair Foundation, donated canned goods to Second Harvest, and contributed to the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program. Since its creation, the members of Students for a Free Society have distributed over 600 pocket Constitutions to ETSU Students, Faculty, and Staff and have registered over 50 people to vote in Washington County, TN.

 

Co-founder and current Chair Matthew Jeffers expressed his appreciation, saying: "The 2009 Outstanding Southern Group Award recognizes all the effort and dedication of the members of SFS. We're deeply honored to have been selected."
